The Social Science Society is putting up clips from various programs from this academic year on YouTube. It will be a slow process, since they only let us do 10 minutes at a time, but below is a little snippet from yesterday's presentation on the Harlem Renaissance with guest lecturer Terrell Carter.

DXD: Sicko

We have finalized a date for the screening of Sicko as part of the Documentaries Across the Disciplines (DXD) program. We will be screening this important Michael Moore documentary on Tuesday, April 22 in the SSB Auditorium.

Showtimes are the usual 1 PM and 7 PM.

We can use help in marketing this event, assistance is scheduling companion programming, and day-of-event popcorn and soda sales.

Live Entertainment in the Cafe (Wed 2/20)

Tomorrow (Wednesday, February 20) there will be live entertainment in the Cafe/Bookstore. Below is the information as it was sent to me:

There will be an musical performance in the café/bookstore Wednesday (tomorrow) at noon by Matthew Clay. There is not a great deal of music on his site, but if you want to check it out, it’s http://www.matthewclay.com/ ; he has a band, but tomorrow he will be performing solo.

This is our first time having entertainment in the café/bookstore, so come check it out!

Volunteer Opportunity: Channel 9 Pledge Drive

Stephanie Tolson, Dean of Learning Resources, is organizing the following volunteer opportunity.

St. Charles Community College students are invited to participate in a volunteer opportunity working the telephones at the (Saturday) March 1, 2008 KETC Fund Drive.

Students will need to communicate their interest to Dr. Tolson later than February 25. Each student will receive food and experience participating in a live televised promotional activity.

Volunteer Opportunity: BJC-St Peters

Looking for some volunteers for our Skilled Nursing/Rehab unit in Barnes- Jewish St. Peters Hospital.

Our unit is called TLC- Transitional Living Center and our residents stay with us for 1 to 2 weeks for a variety of reasons.

We are looking for some individuals who would be interested in performing a Recreational Activity with them during the day or evening. Times are flexible and so are days of the week. There will be a required background check, an interview, a PPD test, and 2 orientation classes to our hospital. Then a training/orientation to the TLC department specifics.

We only ask that you can commit to 40 hours per calendar year with our hospital/TLC unit.

Some examples of Recreational Activities are... crafts, games, puzzles, socials, and performing music (guitar/piano/ instrument..) The activity should be about one hour in length and conducted by you in some manner. The hospital will provide materials (with the exception of instruments- We do have a piano on our TLC unit that can be used) depending on the activity. Activities can be performed as a group or individually but all activities are performed with in view of licensed staff.

There will be a meeting of the Social Science Society on Thursday, December 6. The meeting will be held at 2:30 in SSB 1402.

This is the last meeting of the Fall semester. This is also the last meeting before MLK day activities, Student Debt Awareness Week, and the beginning of Black History Month activities.

We have lots of stuff to do, so hope to see everyone there!

Last week we attended the Student Activity Fund Committee meeting with hats in hand, begging for $2000 for our BHM activities. We received our 100% of our request!

Hot Dog!

At our meeting on Thursday (11/1), it was agreed to buy a hot dog roller machine for future fundraisers. This came to be after we had such success selling hot dogs during Pumpkinfest. Our plans to use this machine include DXD night performances, BHM activities and The History Theatre Festival. Oh--and especially at Trivia Night.

I've included a picture of the machine. I chose this model over another, same-size model, because it came with a plastic guard. In addition, the toaster oven was bonus, though I am not sure we would ever use it much. Here are other specs of the machine:

Large 1000-watt hot-dog roller for rotisserie-grilled stadium hot dogs

5 rotisserie rollers can cook 8 regular hot dogs or 4 jumbo dogs simultaneously

Oven works as built-in bun warmer; adjustable heat controls; auto shut-off timer

Heat-resistant splatter shield; removable roller and oil tray for quick cleanup

Measures 18-1/2 by 11-1/2 by 8 inches

The total cost, including shipping, was $79.87 (or about 1/2 what we had budgeted).

Trivia Night Committee

Are you interested in helping out for the Trivia Night in March? If so, join the Trivia Night Planning Committee.

Our focus for the remainder of the Fall Semester will be obtaining contributions (prizes, auction items) and marketing the event.

Also, many people have never attended a Trivia Night but want to help with ours. If so, committee membership also includes attending a Trivia Night this Saturday, 11/3 at the Olivette Community Center.

RENOWNED GENEALOGIST TO PRESENT FAMILY HISTORY WORKSHOP AT ST. CHARLES COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Community members can learn to start – or enhance – their family history search through a one-day Family History Workshop to be held 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Charles Community College.

For beginners as well as experienced genealogists, the workshop will be led by Michael John Neill, a faculty member of the Genealogical Institute of Mid-America at the University of Illinois-Springfield and nationally known genealogist.

“If you’re just getting started piecing your family history together or if you need help in digging deeper, this workshop will help. Not only do we have an excellent presenter in Michael, but participants will learn from each other’s experiences as well,” said Marva Lee Roellig, president of the St. Charles County Genealogical Society.

Workshop topics will include: learning to use Footnote.com to access National Archives records, the history of American naturalization and its effects on family history, and writing your ancestor’s biography, and determining the integrity of information to help the family historian make informed conclusions.

Registration fee for the Family History Workshop is $20 ($10 for students, faculty and staff).
Registration availability cannot be guaranteed after Saturday, Oct. 13.
An optional catered lunch is available for $7.50.

Pumpkinfest, Saturday 10/6/2007

The Social Science Society is one of the clubs working the food booths at Saturday's Pumpkinfest. This is a chance for the club to make some big bucks as well as an opportunity for members to earn triple fundraising points!

Workers needed from 12:30 - 5:30
Earn 1 fundraising point for any time given.
Earn 3 fundraising points for working entire 5 hour block.

Since we are serving food, all volunteers must wear a hat or a hairnet.
Gloves will be provided.

The foodbooths will be close to the Fine Arts Building--look for our big tent there!

Democracy Days

Fall Fun Blitz

The Fall Fun Blitz is Wednesday and Thursday, September 5 and 6. We are teaming up with HSSO (Human Services Student Organization) for our booth this year.

What says Fall more than Football? We are having a Football Toss for our booth this year. We will be giving away a pair of Rams tickets via a drawing. To qualify for the drawing, students will have to successfully toss one of the footballs through the opening (with three tries).

We do have Moe's and car wash coupons to give all who participate or drop by. Do we want to do Blue or Gold beads for all who qualify for the drawing?

Documentaries Across the Disciplines

The 2007-2008 academic year is the inaugural year for the Documentaries Across the Disciplines program. The purpose of this program is to expose students to new ideas, as well as provoke discussion and debate via film.

We will be showing documentaries, biopics, and "based on a true story" films. Our current schedule is below.

I would love help in scheduling companion programming for each of these movies. Fortunately, the Breast Cancer Diaries will coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Week where there is already a committee in place. However, I would love (love, love, love) some assistance in finding programs for Hispanic Heritage Month as well as something enviro-friendly to go with Who Killed the Electric Car.

Welcome to the blog for the Social Science Society at St Charles Community College. Wow, we are almost modern! Actually, I can't believe I hadn't thought of this before since I do have my own personal blog and also contribute to other blogs.

I am hoping this can keep everyone updated and will also allow me to post stuff as I think about it (instead of forgetting it by meeting time).
